Poetry Appreciation Course
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
————William Shakespeare
Good poetry has a charm that captivates you when you first read it. Poetry uses the least words to express the deepest emotions and information the poet wants to convey. To the novice reader, the expression of poetry can appear to be very obscure. Not every poem is written in modern English, so it can be a challenge for non-native English speakers to grasp the full meaning of archaic words. This can prevent students from forming any real appreciation of poetry.
At GoMappED, we try to instill a love of poetry in our students. Our experienced teachers:
- guide students through each new poem
- explain and discuss the meaning of the poem (critical analysis)
- point out the poetic devices used by the poet
- help students understand the language used by the poet
- practise reading and answering exam questions
- provides students with the relevant vocabulary they need to answer exam questions effectively
Suitable for students: junior and senior high school students who want to improve their grades in the middle and high school entrance examinations, have a good English foundation, and are interested in poetry appreciation.
